Why Choose A Professional Handyman?
The modern professional handyman is not your great aunt's, "I know a guy."
For years, the word handyman has carried a negative stigma. When some one mentioned that they were a handyman, the immediate assumption was, great, another jack of all trades and master of none. The handyman of years gone past was the guy who would arrive in a beat up old truck, in the clothes they wore yesterday and with alcohol on their breath, claiming to be able to solve all your problems. The good side is at least they were cheap, right? Well, maybe in the short term, but what about when that uninsured, "cheap" handyman floods your house? Don't get me wrong, those types of handymen still exist, but thankfully, now there is alternative options.
The modern professional handyman may be able to do most anything you would need, but will have a set list of services offered. In addition, they will most likely have a list of featured, or primary, services that they specialize in. There will be an established web page with detailed information and great customer reviews. They will arrive in a nice, labeled vehicle and step out with their uniform on. They won't smell like alcohol and will be, from start to finish, the quintessential professional. They won't make outlandish claims of solving every problem you have, but the services they do offer will be completed with a high level of quality and professionalism.
The Benefits
So, we have listed the two different types of handyman services that are in existence, but why hire a handyman in the first place? Wouldn't it be better to have someone who specializes in exactly what you need? Often yes, there are limits to what anyone not dedicated to a specific profession can do, as well as legal limits. However, a quality handyman will know and communicate to you, the customer, when that limit has been reached. Until then, often the most economical and stress free option, is to hire a professional handyman that you can trust. For minor repairs across a wide variety of projects, they will have the ability to properly complete them, one after the other. At which point, you no longer need to keep up with multiple different contractors, or worry about the crew of shady looking guys that just arrived.
The key things to look for in a handyman is professionalism and trust. You want to be sure that they are not novices and know what they are doing, but that isn't quite enough. A whole lot of contractors and handymen know their trades, but to truly experience the benefits of a professional handyman service, they must be trustworthy. Although, the true test of trust and professionalism can only be certified by time and relationship, one of the quickest ways to establish both of those things is to read customer reviews. They are very telling and if they say nothing, that is telling as well. Secondly, if they have a web page, look it over, this is their attempt at introducing themselves to you; do you like what you see? Thirdly, speak with the handyman and establish rapport. Last but certainly not least, if at anytime you get a bad feeling: RUN!
